A toilet that talks and some nice written messages

I visited the Museum of Contemporary Art restroom during the Biennale of Sydney and there was an audio installation in place. So when you were sitting on the loo a woman’s voice was saying ‘Hello?’ etc. A bit unnerving but definitely entertaining. The ‘all we need is love’ message has been there for awhile now and I hope they leave it there.

Lots of natural light and a retro feel though it was refreshing to use clean public toilets for once.

The Great Toilet of Webs

Ah, the great outdoors. The toilets here are full of spiders, cockroaches, moths, ants… you name it! It’s simply great! (compared to the artless sterility of a Sheraton or whatever) It stinks too, but hey, that’s what makes it unique!
So are YOU thinking of coming to the outback? If you are, come to 50 Mawsons Road Beerwah where you can enjoy the comforts of a real toilet. Sounds like we’re stepping on fortune cookies.

A truly memorable toileting experience...

Recently I had the pleasure, and I can’t use that word strongly enough, not to mention the privelige, of using the facilities at 30 Druit St Adaminaby, in New South Wales, Australia. Located in the High Country, this toilet sits high and proud at 1000m above sea level, and when flushing it’s nice to know that most of the water used is snow melt, collected in nearby Lake Eucumbene.

Toilets talk

Cockatoo Island on Sydney Harbour had been closed for ten years until recently. Everything had stood still since the island stopped operations as the largest dockyard in the southern hemisphere of the time. The marks of the navy and dockyard workers from that era (entirely male of course) tell an interesting story – all written on the walls. Although mostly offensive, these toilets have been earmarked for heritage preservation with the graffiti to be preserved forever behind plastic coverings. Despite the content, what the walls have to share provides a fascinating insight into the socio-cultural milieu of working class Australia. From an anthropological perspective its important that we don’t "sugar-coat" the past (or the present) and pretend that the uglier side of humanity never existed. Everything is history and helps us understand who we are and where we came from. Before the island was used to build ships and submarines, its was a school for naughty girls and before that a lock-up for convicts.

The toilets may stink but the entertainment value is high.

Read the walls at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahimsa/sets/1542211/
