Camp Waub-O-Jeeg

Taylors Falls, MN

Reviewed July 25th, 2004

Looks can be deceiving, and even an outhouse that looks clean can be a real stinker when you get inside. Such was the case at Camp Waub-O-Jeeg, a private campground just outside Taylors Falls. I can't vouch one way or another for the facilities in the shower building, but the men's outhouse in the tent campground begat a smell that could kill large game, or at least healthy water fowl. It is not an odor that creeps up on you, like a poisonous snake or the dangerous toad fish. Nor is it an unknown, but expected danger like an enemy soldier on the battlefield. I attest that I have never before witnessed such a thing. Some outhouses, like porta-potties of various and sundry types, reek of chemical disinfectant. Others, like the vault or pit variety smell like good old decaying feces, or moss when abandoned. The Camp Waub-O-Jeeg crapper reeked of powerful chemicals and feces in such a manner that one smelled and TASTED the odor long after use. And for those extra hardy souls who still aren't daunted, let the sign at the gates of hell read; YE SHALL ENTER HERE, WHO THINK THAT MERE MOUTH BREATHING SHALL SAVE YOU! Judging by the gasps and cursing of the many women I saw exiting their side of the outhouse, allowing the door to slam behind them as they scurried away, I'm going to make the wild assumption that they had similar experiences.
