Joyce Estate, Chippewa National Forest

Marcell District, MN

According to an interpretive sign, this historic outhouse used to be a "playhouse." Back in the days the outhouse/playhouse, along with other restored structures nearby, were part of a private resort for a well-to-do logging family. As I peered down the bottom of the standard outhouse hole, I detected nothing with my ocular nerves or olfactory nodes that indicated a former playhouse. If my critics accuse me of lacking creative vision, so be it. Perchance, was this former outhouse a playhouse at the same time? Well, when my brother and I roamed the estate on a beautiful, late September day we had no one with us to interpret the interpretive sign. Suffice it to say that the historians told us what we need to know, and no more. It is not every day that a commoner like myself is allowed, nay encouraged, to piss in a historic structure. Bright red sumac and giant, orange-yellow hued Amanita mushrooms greeted us on the two mile hike there like ambassadors from the planet Autumn. I'm satisfied.
