Trout Lake Semiprimitive Nonmotorized Area, Chippewa National Forest

Marcell District, MN

Reviewed October 15th, 2004

Two campsites on the west side of Trout Lake share a single toilet. An enigmatic path marked out by old pine needles leads to a loo. This loo has three wood walls for decency. In the interests of keepin' it real, it has no roof. Why? Don't ask why: it's not your place. The gargantuan, three hundred year old pine trees crowding in for a view of your humble, human flesh, they can ask why if they choose. They have earned the right. But do not worry. Its doubtful that they care about you or your mortal concerns. They were here before stuff and will remain long after stuff. Our schemes and dreams and designs contain no meaning for these wondrous, sap filled overlords. Have a seat on the toilet, tilt your head back to inhale the brisk, sassy air and JUST. THINK. ABOUT. THAT.
