Sushi Tango

Sushi Tango

Minneapolis, MN

Reviewed March 19th, 2005

While waiting for my sushi to appear at Calhoun Square's Sushi Tango one Saturday night, I felt compelled to visit the restrooms. I didn't have to go per se, but I had a camera in hand and time to kill. A little bit of time. My spouse and I had bought tickets to a movie that started in half an hour. Once the Futomaki came, I would have to do some hard core scarfing. In the meantime though I ventured over to the northwestern corner, down a hall and past a locked cage of beer (tempting, if only I had my hacksaw). Inside, the restrooms were remarkably bright compared to the windowless dark bar. It was relatively clean - though the floor could've stood a mopping and the urinal had not been flushed. The small mirror had a few pitiful scrawlings marring it but overall... ooh I bet my sushi is ready. Gotta go.

Heading back to the bar I was disappointed to find no food waiting for me, though our server assured us we would have it 10 minutes ago. Hmmm.. 7:15. Five minutes until the movie starts. There's always 5-10 minutes of trailers anyway. No big deal. 7:20, the Futomaki comes. We ask for carryout, pay our bill and jet. My wife eats the bulk of her roll on the way to the theater. I decide I want to enjoy my food. I'll smuggle it in.

Now, no matter how good sushi smells in the restaurant, no matter how fresh or how high the grade of fish is - let me tell you something. You and everyone around you will smell your sushi the minute you pop the lid on your polystyrene container in a movie theater. Maybe the looks I was getting were jealous glances. After all, wouldn't you rather have a glamorous Japanese meal than a greasy bucket of popcorn or some gooey Dots that just get stuck in your teeth. But I have a hunch they thought I was eating two week old fish heads or maybe I was a deep sea fisherman covered head to toe in chum. And they weren't too happy about it. I got rid of the evidence as fast as I could. Next time remind me to smuggle a Sapporo too.
