Luxor - Pharaoh's Pheast Buffet
Las Vegas, NV
Reviewed April 15th, 2005
Usually I'm pretty cautious around businesses that intentionally mispell or abbreviate words in their name; Kwik Trip, Hot 'N Now, In-N-Out Burger, and Toys R Us (which further has the nerve to flip their R the wrong way) come to mind. Obviously when we're talking about a high-profile casino such as the Luxor there is a certain credibility which the brand lends to it's basement buffet. But, to be honest, (in my limited experience with the unlimited expanses of the buffet dining experience) this is a great buffet - even if the owner's thought it would be cute or memorable or witty to misspell "feast."The designers were systematic in carrying through the ancient Egyptian theme through every corner of this expansive pyramid-shaped casino. Even the buffet area, often perceived as a hangout for the lowrollers and cheapskates, is adorned with obelisks and heiroglyphics. However, the one area which seemed to receive the least amount of attention (while perhaps offering the most potential) was the restrooms. Certainly, there's sand-colored tile, and wallpaper which may invoke a tinge of Cleopatra. But c'mon. This is Las Vegas. Give me a worn stone brick wall. Men and women door signs peeled from an ancient hieroglyphic manuscript. A sarcophagus shaped urinal. A marble fountain for a sink. A mural of distant pyramids against an azure sky. Whatever it takes to make a statement. But I might recommend staying away from using toilets shaped like pyramids.
