Frankfurt, Germany

Reviewed November 3rd, 2005

When in Frankfurt, you’re obligated to drink the provincial beverage apfelwein (“apple wine”) – a crisp, not-so-sweet apple juice with a fermented aftertaste (5.5% alcohol).

You’ll need plenty of it to wash down all the sausages, the obligatory food of the region. For the timid appetite, a weiner will do. Up the anty with a generously-sized white sausage – the bockwurst. And for the sturdy German appetitie, there’s the big one – the “Reisenthuringer”. (Any German word with the prefix “riesen” is bound to be huge.)

After several pints of apfelwein, when you make your way to the men’s bathroom, you’ll be forced to make the same evaluation on your self. I timidly chose the “S” wanting to keep one urinal’s distance from those proud Reisenthuringers of the Deutschland.
