Daalo Restaurant
Minneapolis, MN
Reviewed November 10th, 2005
Housed on the end of a light industrial building (complete with loading docks near the front entrance), Daalo has been serving up marvelous East African-French-American fusion for about six months. The remnants of the Chinese restaurant previously in the space are apparent. A large sign reading "Tasty Express" sits outside and there are still Chinese characters above the door. In fact, the only way you would know this is, in fact, Daalo is by reading the spraypaint on the pavement near the entrance ("DAALO"). The restroom is also a reflection of this building's heritage, layered with years of wear and tear well beyond the point of charming. Dirt and mold encrusted chipped tiles line the edge of the floor. The light switch looks like it may have come from a Kwik-E-Lube garage and the stall walls are rusting near the bottom. I assume there are problems with a flooding toilet because a milk jug with the top cut off was resting on the floor. It appeared as though there may have been some recent experimenting with paper towel dispensers - as four of them rested on the ground in the hallway outside. Inside were new pull-down tissue style dispensers. The familiar smell of Swisher air fresheners provided respite from what could have been an overpowering stale stench. Lime green paint was splattered on the walls and floors in a few small places.
